As many of you are already aware there have been some changes recently implemented in the new healthcare laws. While most of the new law was written in broad terms, the Department of HHS is still working out details with rules and regulations. As of July 1, 2010 members could add dependents up to age 26 regardless of student or marital status. A similar law was passed in Illinois one year ago but the new federal law makes it effective in all states. There are also more changes phasing in on September 23, 2010. One of which allows that pre-existing condition exclusions for members under age 19 are removed. This allows for all pre-existing conditions to be covered from day one but does not give guaranteed issue and does not apply to grandfathered plans. This will also impact plans and rates for new enrollees after September 23, 2010. As a result, some insurers are no longer offering coverage for child only plans in the individual market. Other carriers are adjusting new rates for plans after September 23, 2010 that would include family coverage.
